Diet before donating blood

General rules

A blood test allows you to obtain reliable information about the patient’s health status / presence of the disease at an early stage, both at a particular point in time, and to compare various indicators in dynamics. Very often, the symptoms of the disease have not yet manifested, and blood counts already indicate its presence.

The reliability of the data obtained is determined by many factors, including the correct preparation of the patient for the blood donation procedure. Blood counts are quite sensitive to various changes in the body. Factors that affect blood counts include medications, food, alcohol and smoking, exercise, stress, and in some analyzes, the phase of the woman’s menstrual cycle and even the time of day.

In addition, whole donated blood and its elements are a valuable unique therapeutic tool that many patients urgently need after and during operations or who are in serious condition. It is donor blood that saves the lives of many of us. The diet before blood donation is largely determined by the type of analysis: a general clinical blood test, a blood test for sugar, biochemical, immunological analysis, allergological tests, analysis for the content of hormones, tumor markers, and others.

Donor diet before blood donation

Preparation of the body for blood donation should begin in three days. During this period, it is recommended to introduce boiled chicken or lean beef, low-fat varieties of white fish, fresh / boiled vegetables (except beets), jam, honey, pasta, and cereals into the diet. For one day and directly on the day of blood donation, the donor should exclude from his diet any fried, smoked, fatty and spicy foods, all fish, meat and dairy products, eggs and butter (including vegetable), nuts, chocolate and dates. It is not recommended to use caffeinated drinks (tea, coffee), highly carbonated drinks during this period.

The diet includes crackers, bread, pasta cooked in water without oil, juices, sweet tea with jam, fruit drinks, fruit drinks, mineral water without gas, vegetables and fruits: apricots, pears, apples, pomegranates, plums, prunes and dried apricots (for excluding bananas, avocados, oranges and tangerines). The use of dill and cilantro can negatively affect the result of the study.

The diet before donating blood, as well as before donating plasma, provides for a complete refusal two days before the donation of any alcohol-containing drinks. In the morning on the day of blood donation, breakfast should be light, carbohydrate, and sweet tea should be drunk before the blood donation procedure. You should refrain from smoking one to two hours before blood donation. After donating blood to the donor, a special full-fledged meal is organized at the donor site, including a snack and two hot dishes.

Preparation for blood donation for biochemistry involves more stringent restrictions on the daily regimen and diet. There are a number of differences in patient preparation, depending on the indicators that will be investigated.

Blood test for sugar. Various methods of analysis can be used (rapid analysis, blood glucose analysis, glucose tolerance test with exercise). All sugar studies are conducted on the basis of a 3-day low-carb diet on a background of standard physical activity. Do not starve or overeat before taking the test. A blood test for sugar is given on an empty stomach. Last meal - at least 12 hours in advance. Before the procedure, it is forbidden to take alcohol-containing and coffee drinks, use chewing gum and toothpaste for brushing your teeth.

When donating blood to urea it is necessary to refuse 1-2 days before blood sampling from the use of the liver and kidneys, limit the diet of meat, fish, coffee, tea. When donating blood to alpha-2-macroglobulin it is necessary 3 days before blood sampling to completely exclude all meat food from the diet. When appointing new non-invasive studies of the liver (FibroTest, FibroMax) for 1-2 days, it is necessary to exclude the intake of products that artificially stain the serum (carrots, beets, pumpkins, orange). Not recommended ascorbic acid.

When donating blood to thyroid hormones, it is necessary to exclude iodine-containing products from the diet in 2 days (seaweed, cod liver, hake, legumes, freshwater fish, herring, seafood, parsley, spinach, sorrel, dill, iodized salt). In preparation for a blood test for free testosterone the last meal should be at least 12 hours before the procedure. It is not allowed to consume juice, coffee and tea (especially with sugar). You can drink only water. Taking blood on progesterone produced in the morning on an empty stomach, with an 8-12 hour interval between the last meal with the exception of fats from the diet.

Before donating blood for analysis, the diet includes buckwheat porridge from the cereal kernel, rice porridge on the water, barley porridge on the water, cooked pasta, wheat bread, sliced ​​long loaf, crackers from white bread, various juices, sweet tea with jam, mineral water without gas, fruit drinks, fruit drinks, vegetables and fruits: apricots, pears, apples, pomegranates, plums, prunes and dried apricots.
