Diet for high cholesterol

General rules

Elevated level cholesterol in the blood is a risk factor atherosclerosis.

This fat-like substance is necessary for the formation of enzymes, hormones and other things. However, with a violation of its metabolism and its high level in the blood, irreversible changes in the vessel wall develop - atherosclerosis, which is dangerous for its complications (heart attack, stroke, violation of the blood supply to various organs).

Imbalance between the fractions — low density LDL and high density lipoproteins (HDL), is considered dangerous in terms of the development of atherosclerosis. The former have an atherogenic effect and their high content is a risk of cardiovascular disease. High density cholesterol ("good") is produced by the body. Moderate physical activity contributes to its production and at the same time reduce the accumulation of harmful, which comes only with products.

To reduce cholesterol, a nutritional diet has been developed. A diet to lower blood cholesterol can be used in the treatment and prevention of diseases - it is suitable for people who monitor their health. Its goal is to improve lipid metabolism and weight loss. The main principle of this diet is to reduce animal fat, which we get from meat, fatty dairy products, and simple carbohydrates. Polyunsaturated fats (their source are vegetable oils and nuts), fiber and complex carbohydrates (we get them from vegetables, grains, bran) should predominate in the diet. It is a large amount of fiber that helps remove excess cholesterol from the digestive tract. The protein content in this therapeutic nutrition is within normal limits, and you can get them through the use of a variety of legumes and lean meats.

The amount of bread is not more than 200 g per day, the use of diet bread with bran is also allowed. Salt is limited and the amount of fluid consumed is up to 1.2 liters. Dishes need to be cooked without salt, but it is allowed to add ready-made food on the table. Vegetables are eaten raw or stewed, and it is better to boil (bake) meat and fish to reduce fat in the diet. It is considered important to eat a large number of vegetables at dinner. Daily calories - 1400-1500 kcal.

The main principles of nutrition with high cholesterol in the blood:

  • Cereals, vegetables and fruits containing complex carbohydrates and large amounts of fiber should make up about 60% of the diet. Vegetables need to be eaten daily 400 g (a third fresh) and 200 g of cereal products.
  • The predominance of vegetable oils in the diet.
  • Moderate consumption of permitted dairy products.
  • Food with high cholesterol in the blood includes the inclusion of fish, chicken and turkey, which are the products of choice, and lean beef in the diet should take second place.
  • The amount of salt is minimal.
  • 2-3 eggs per week (protein is not limited).
  • Avoid hunger (take snacks with fruits in time).

The diet for high cholesterol in women does not differ from that for men and the general principles of nutrition are maintained. The total cholesterol in women and men should be no more than 5.2 mmol / l, the indicator of 6.19 mmol / l is already considered significantly increased. HDL in women should be at least 0.9 mmol / L and up to 1.9 mmol / L, in men this indicator differs from 0.7 to 1.7 mmol / L.

The onset of menopause adversely affects cholesterol metabolism and is due to the fact that with the onset of its synthesis estrogen decreases, and it regulates the production of "good" cholesterol. Increasing the "bad" contribute to a sedentary lifestyle of a woman, overeating and eating fatty and high-calorie foods.

Nutrition with high cholesterol in women should contain maximum plant-rich foods phytosterolsthat control and lower bad cholesterol:

  • wheat germ;
  • sesame seeds;
  • sunflower seeds;
  • flax seed;
  • olive oil;
  • grape seed oil;
  • avocado.

No less useful vegetables and fruits containing pectin: apples, citrus fruits, beets, watermelons and natural vegetable juices. Remember that all fruits and vegetables in purple and red contain polyphenols, which stimulate the production of good cholesterol: blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, cranberry juice, aronia, lingonberries, pomegranates, purple and red grapes, plums, and eggplant. Green leafy salads and vegetables are also useful: cabbage, lettuce, spinach, sorrel, artichoke and parsley, dill and green onions available to everyone.

Beans must be included in the diet, which due to the high fiber content will remove harmful cholesterol from the intestines. In terms of protein, they can replace meat.

It’s good for women aged to eat soy products containing phytoestrogens. Do not forget about the proper cooking of meat and fish - a minimum of fat during cooking - best baked in the oven, in pots or steamed.

Given the craving of women for sweets, it will be very difficult to refuse sweet cream products, chocolate and sweets, pastries, cookies, waffles and limit yourself to sugar. But this must be done. Fatty meat should also disappear from the diet, you have to abandon processed meat (sausages, boiled pork). Banned pork, lard and bacon. Do not forget about the need for physical activity. All this will bring only benefit - analyzes will normalize, weight will decrease, and you will honor yourself attractive.

Often high cholesterol is noted in diseases of the internal organs and endocrine system: nephritis, hypothyroidism, obesity, diabetes. Such a combined pathology requires a special approach to nutrition and more serious treatment. In each case, the issue is decided individually and clinical nutrition is prescribed for the underlying disease. For example, what kind of diet is indicated for high cholesterol due to kidney disease? In this case, you must comply Table number 7 and its varieties. Diet 7 prescribed for chronic kidney diseases and in addition to limiting salt and the amount of fluid consumed, it provides for the exclusion of foods rich in cholesterol (kidneys, liver, egg yolk, brain).

Allowed Products

Proper nutrition with high cholesterol should become the norm. What should it be? First of all, you need to exclude meat broths - prepare vegetarian soups, if it is difficult and unusual for you, then you can use a weak secondary broth for the first dishes and carefully remove fat. Use potatoes in a minimal amount and it is better to cook prefabricated vegetable soups, cabbage soup and borsch.

Meat and poultry need to be taken in non-greasy species, the skin of the bird is unacceptable, and the fat from meat should be cut further. Since the diet provides for the restriction of fats, the meat needs to be boiled or baked without the addition of sour cream, mayonnaise and any fat. Garnish with vegetables, not cereals. They are better prepared for breakfast (oat, buckwheat and brown rice).

Cabbage (all types), carrots, squash, pumpkin, eggplant, or salads of fresh vegetables and green peas will help lower cholesterol. The total amount of vegetables eaten per day is at least 400g.

Use first-pressed vegetable oils for dressing ready meals. Useful in this regard is linseed oil, a leader in the content of fatty acids omega 3that regulate the production of beneficial lipids.

Lowering cholesterol can be achieved by introducing into the diet dishes from marine low-fat fish, and the use of meat (chicken) should still be limited to 1 time per week. From fish it is worth choosing diet varieties: hake, haddock, blue whiting, saffron cod, pollack, pollock.

Bread is allowed rye, made from grain flour and bran. Can be used for snacks and first courses without yeast bread (with bran, with flax seeds). Milk and fermented milk products are allowed only in reduced fat content and in limited quantities. Allowed green tea and weak coffee with milk and without sugar, vegetable juices and fruit without sugar.
